Zahra Tootonsab

Overview

Zahra Tootonsab has expressed support for terrorists, equated Israel with Nazi Germany, spread hatred of Israel and was a Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) activist at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) from 2016 to 2018.

Tootonsab is also a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of March 2023, Tootonsab’s LinkedIn page said she was the “Outreach and Promotion Manager” for the SJP chapter at UTSC, which is known as Toronto SJP (TSJP), from May 2016 to April 2018.

Tootonsab’s LinkedIn also said she had been an “Editor” for the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at the University of Toronto (UofT) (UofT MSA) from September 2016 to April 2017, and that she had been working as a teaching assistant at McMaster University (McMaster) in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, since September 2021.

As of September 2022, Tootonsab was reportedly “in the second year of her PhD program in the Faculty of Humanities’ Department of English and Cultural Studies” at McMaster.

As of March 2023, Tootonsab’s LinkedIn said she had graduated from the University of Alberta (UAlberta) with a master’s degree in English and Film Studies in August 2021. UAlberta is located in Edmonton, Alberta.

Tootonsab’s LinkedIn also said she graduated from UTSC with a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology and English in 2019.

In March 2023, Tootonsab was a member of the bargaining unit for Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3906 which represented academic workers at McMaster.

As of March 2023, Tootonsab used the handle “@APersianz” on Twitter.

Terror Support

Tootonsab retweeted a February 11, 2023 tweet that said: “Protest for Ahmad Manasra on his birthday January 22, 2023 in front of the Israeli Consulate in Toronto…” The tweet contained a photo in which Tootonsab appeared giving a speech while holding the extension of a megaphone.

Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.

On January 18, 2023, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “Hi all… On January 22, at 2 p.m., there will be a rally in Toronto. We are calling for the release of Palestinian child prisoner Ahmad Manasra, who will turn 21 after being imprisoned for eight years. Please join us in showing our solidarity…”

On March 2, 2022, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “‘US civil society governments and mainstream media have denied Palestinians' 75-year struggle for their freedom. They have egregiously labeled lawful Palestinian resistance as terrorism towards Israel.’”

Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” can be a euphemism for nationalistic terror. It is often used to excuse or even glorify anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.

Equating Israel with Nazi Germany

Tootonsab retweeted a February 20, 2015 tweet that said: “Why should Palestine pay for nazi crimes.” The tweet included an image that offered a definition of "i-ro-ny," reading: “When a people who survived a genocide use it as an excuse to commit genocide.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

Demonizing Israel

On June 6, 2021, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “Free all Palestinian prisoners!!” The post included an image of another post by anti-Israel activist Remi Kanazi that accused Israel of “apartheid.”

On May 24, 2021, after a ceasefire during Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW), Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “...For Palestinians, a ceasefire does not mean peace; the oppression and ethnic cleansing continues...”

In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching OGW, carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.

On May 22, 2021, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “Israel THE terrorist, an apartheid state…”

On May 15, 2021, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “#FreePalestine #savesheikhjarrah Inshallah [God willing] Palestine will be free in our lifetime.”

In May 2021, Palestinian violence erupted in anticipation of an Israel High Court ruling on eviction proceedings concerning over 70 Palestinian tenants illegally residing in Jewish-owned properties in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

In the post, Tootonsab added a video of protesters waving Palestinian flags and honking while inside their cars. She also added a photo of a sign that said: “WHY THE F**K does Canada Support/Fund Apartheid and Genocide? #FREEPALESTINE.”

Also on May 15, 2021, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “There's a feedback loop: The training of US police officers by the Israel army. Read!”

The accusation that Israeli law enforcement teaches American police brutal tactics during police exchange programs is used to demonize Israel. Participants in these programshave stated [00:02:14] that the training in Israel focuses [00:13:36] on public policy, counter-terrorism and leadership training in the form of lectures and discussions.

On May 11, 2021, during OGW, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: SHOW UP FOR PALESTINIANS! / Protests happening today till May 15 (Saturday). / Toronto protest: May 15, Nathan Phillips Square @7 pm / #FreePalestine / #savesheikhjarrah / #Nakba73 …”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

Anti-Israel Activism

On May 13, 2021, during OGW, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “Hi friends. I am gathering people for a second protest in Edmonton this Sunday, May 16, at 2 pm… If you are interested, please message me, and I'll add you to the group.” The post included an image of a flier titled: “Palestine Action Edmonton.”

On May 12, 2021, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “Palestine Actions in Canada. GO TO THE PROTESTS. Demand nothing less than #FreePalestine.” The post included an image that displayed the dates of other protests across Canada.

On the same date, Tootonsab posted on Facebook: “EDMONTON DRIVE FOR PALESTINE!” The post included an image of a flier with the details of an anti-Israel protest held in Edmonton.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

MSA

The MSA was  established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."

The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.

The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
