Report on the University of Houston (January 2017)

Canary Mission investigated anti-Semitism among students and 2016 graduates of the University of Houston (UH). We identified 13 individuals who between them posted dozens of times expressing hatred of Jews and Israel, praise for Hitler, mockery of the Holocaust and threats of violence against Jews. Such posts came from a number of members of student activist groups like UH’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) chapters, as well as from individuals unaffiliated with these groups. One was a student at a different university but was found to be active in the UH SJP and MSA chapters.

Roberts is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and a member of the Facebook group BDS Houston.

Supporting Terrorism

As of November 28, 2016, Roberts set an image of airplane hijacker Leila Khaled as his Twitter cover photo. Khaled is a prominent member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). She participated in the hijacking of TWA Flight 840 in 1969 and El Al Flight 219 in 1970. In a 2014 interview, Khaled said that the second Intifada failed because it was not violent enough. On April 11, 2016, Khaled said: “Negotiations will be held only with knives and weapons. That is what the Palestinian people is like.”

On May 6, 2014, Roberts tweeted: “F**k that sh*t! I support what the PFLP & PLO have done in their cause to free the Palestinians.” His tweet referenced the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

On November 3, 2016, Roberts tabled for SJP UH at the International Marketplace in Butler’s Plaza selling propaganda merchandise. The materials included a map labeled Palestine with all the territory from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River with cities in Israel labeled in Arabic as Palestinian cities.

The stall featured a misleading series of maps that presented lands once controlled by Britain, Egypt and Jordan as autonomous “Palestinian land,” purportedly stolen by Israel. In February of 2016, publishing giant McGraw-Hill Education recalled
a college level textbook that featured the erroneous maps. In October 2015, MSNBC
apologized for airing a similar grouping of maps and retracted them.

On July 9, 2014, Janho shared a Facebook status that accused Israel of myriad human rights abuses. The status pointed Janho’s followers to the anti-semitic hate site If Americans Knew (IAK) — founded by anti-Israel agitator Alison Weir — for “a basic breakdown of the facts.”

On March 17, 2014, Janho was listed on Facebook as an attendee of Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) organized by SJP UH.

On June 26, 2015, Abdoh tweeted: “I need to go throw some rocks at the yahood [Jews].”

Demonizing Jews

On September 13, 2015, Abdoh tweeted: “God help all the women and men defend Al-Aqsa. The yahood [Jews] are doing some terrible things right now in Jerusalem.”

On that day masked Palestinian rioters had barricaded themselves inside the Dome of the Rock. They set off fireworks —  which started a small fire inside the building —  and threw stones and debris stored inside at Israeli police. The Israeli police later found pipe bombs the rioters had prepared to launch at Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount plaza.

The allegation that Jews “threaten” the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a traditional pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda served as the excuse for an upsurge in Palestinian violence that flared in the fall of 2015.

In a July 17, 2014 Twitter conversation, Abdoh described Israel’s actions during Operation Protective Edge (OPE) as: “@K_wade23 the senseless murder of woman and children.”

On July 17, 2014, Abdoh tweeted: “The media is run by Jews and they control it fully.”

Demonizing Israel

On March 30 – April 3, 2015, SJP UH organized Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW). The itinerary of events included a talk by anti-Israel agitator Alison Weir, who founded the controversial site If Americans Knew (IAK).

On August 8, 2009, Weir wrote an article supporting a blood libel published by a Swedish newspaper —  about Israel harvesting Palestinian organs.

SJP UH’s IAW also featured a mock apartheid wall, erected on campus. The wall featured a misleading series of maps that presented lands once controlled by Britain, Egypt and Jordan as autonomous “Palestinian land,” purportedly stolen by Israel. In February of 2016, publishing giant McGraw-Hill Education recalled a college level textbook that featured the erroneous maps. In October 2015, MSNBC apologized for airing a similar grouping of maps and retracted them.

Supporting Violence

On November 1, 2015, SJP UH shared a post on Facebook promoting a demonstration in Houston and Austin, Texas, co-organized by SJP UH and the Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) at Austin, Texas (PSCAT) to protest the “killing dozens of unarmed Palestinians…” and to “affirm support for the Palestinian resistance… Long Live the Resistance! Long Live the Intifada!”

October 2015 saw an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” saw young Palestinians across Israel stabbing and attempting to stab scores of Israeli civilians.

Hosting Incitement

On August 18, 2014, SJP UH and UH MSA co-organized an event featuring Sheikh Omar Suleiman. SJP UH’s Facebook announcement billed Suleiman as a “vocal human rights supporter.”

On July 24, 2014, Suleiman called on Twitter for a “3rd Intifada” to destroy Israel and claimed Israel arbitrarily denied muslims the right to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Such libels incited deadly violence against Israelis, like the 2014 Har Nof Synagogue Massacre, where terrorists murdered six people in a Jerusalem synagogue during morning prayers.

Supporting a Terrorist

On March 28, 2016, SJP UH shared a post on Facebook supporting terrorist Rasmea Odeh.

Odeh was a key military operative with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated her as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

In November 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application.

In February of 2016, Odeh’s immigration fraud case was sent back to the district court, to examine whether trauma-related, repressed memories, contributed to Odeh’s failure  to disclose her prior conviction.

Pushing BDS

On November 1, 2015, SJP UH shared an event on Facebook announcing plans for a UH Divest campaign and new Facebook page. The event aimed to discuss “all potential strategies” to bring BDS to UH. Proposed strategies included:

  • Revamped tabling and silent demonstrations
  • Discussing BDS and ways to succeed/make an impact with friends from other campuses
  • BDS Workshops to teach the student body what BDS is and why we support it
  • Connecting with and HELPING other minority organizations on campus
